From Toki City, Gifu Prefecture—
the town of Mino ware and Japan’s leading ceramics production area.
From Toki City, Gifu Prefecture—
the town of Mino ware and Japan’s leading ceramics production area.
In 1948, our founder’s grandfather established the company under the trade name “Maruhachi.”
Having served as head clerk at a pottery shop named Marushichi, he set his sights higher and chose the number eight, a symbol of growth and prosperity, as the company name. He opened a store near Toki City Station—this marked the beginning of Fujita Pottery.
Later, during my father’s generation, the Toki Mino Ware Wholesale Cooperative Center (now Oribe Hills) was developed, and we relocated to our current location as a first-phase tenant.
The Toki Mino Ware Wholesale District is also known as the venue for the Toki Mino Ware Festival, which began with the goal of becoming one of Japan’s three major ceramics festivals—and today, it has truly earned that distinction.
I remain deeply grateful to my father for establishing the company in a place where we could support one another alongside peers who shared the same aspirations.
As a wholesale trading company, we handled professional tableware for many years. However, driven by a desire to directly convey the appeal of tableware and how it enriches daily life, we opened our retail store Felice in 2009.
Conceived as not just a place to sell tableware, but a place to share the joy of living, Felice features a kitchen studio where visitors can experience the feel and usability of tableware through cooking and bread-making classes.
Today, while drawing on our experience as a trading company, we also collaborate with manufacturers and industry peers to create systems that enhance the value of Mino ware as a whole.
With gratitude for the foundation built by previous generations—and without forgetting our own sense of excitement—we will continue to share the joy of everyday living through tableware, from Toki to the world.
Message
Our company was founded in 1948 by my grandfather.
Since its founding, we have been involved in the ceramic industry as a trading company in Toki City, Japan’s largest ceramic production area. In 2009, we also opened our retail store Felice, expanding into the retail business. The company has been passed down from my grandfather to my father, and from my father to me—I am now the third generation.
Working with tableware, which is deeply connected to cooking and dining, led me to believe that we should be a company that not only sells products, but also conveys the joy of everyday living. With this in mind, we created a kitchen studio within our store and began offering bread-making and cooking classes.
There is a quote by Mark Twain, the author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer:
“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up.”
I have this phrase displayed throughout the store.
When customers appreciate the products I recommend and say, “I’m glad I asked you,” all my fatigue disappears and I feel truly energized. I will continue striving to contribute, even in a small way, to the Mino ware industry, which is a proud local tradition.
